Live Subtitling

Subtitling live programmes presents challenges that are quite different from offline subtitling. SysMedia has proven products and expertise that enable any broadcaster or subtitling facility to master these challenges. We can provide equipment, advice on how to approach live subtitling in the context of the programme schedule and available information, and provide training and skills development.

SysMedia’s WinCAPS Live subtitling software supports all forms of subtitle preparation necessary for live and fast-turnaround programmes in a single package:

  • Real-time text input (single user or dual user)
  • Download of scripts and running orders from newsroom system
  • Preparation of transcripts for video packages
  • Re-use of tidied live subtitles in a repeat broadcast

SUBMUX - Dual keyboard for fast text entry The biggest challenge in live subtitling is transcribing the audio quickly and accurately. WinCAPS supports input from single or dual PC keyboards, Velotype, Stenographic systems (using our own StenoClient or from third-party systems) and Speech Recognition. Its unique SUBMUX feature, supported by topic-based shortforms, allows two PC keyboards to be used in tandem for fast text entry where no faster method is available. Speech recognition is integrated, so that subtitle re-speakers can dictate subtitle text and colour/position commands using the recognition engine of their choice. Automatic post-processing corrects style and improves quality.

Scripts can be downloaded from a newsroom system to guarantee quality during the links between live pieces. Video packages can be transcribed in advance, and the subtitles cued or set to replay to a specified duration. Subtitles are presented in a conventional block mode, or scrolling line-by-line or word-by-word as preferred.

Depending on the length, complexity and turnaround time of the programme, WinCAPS Live can be used by a single subtitler or by a team. The blend of advanced features, expertise and intuitive design makes it the leading live subtitling system, used by broadcasters and subtitling houses across the world. The greatest cost in providing live subtitles is not in the capital equipment but in the number of staff needed to provide the service. WinCAPS allows this number to be kept to a minimum, making high quality live subtitling both feasible and economic.
