YOUTUBE AUTO-CAPS: HYPE OR HELP
December 2009: YouTube's new automatic captions should not be seen as a cheap substitute for human subtitlers. Google's recent announcement admits that 'the captions will not always be perfect'. "In practice they vary from quite impressive to truly awful; and subtitlers understand only too well the reasons why", observes Andrew Lambourne, commenting on how SysMedia is now harnessing automatic speech recognition technology for more efficient subtitling workflows - where human subtitlers are still an essential element.

TELEVISA AND SUPERCANAL USE WINCAPS
November 2009: Becoming the first broadcast customer in Latin America, Mexico's Televisa Deportes Network (TDN) now creates subtitles for international sports content using WinCAPS and its Final Cut Pro export function to provide a very quick and cost-effective workflow, that's up to 10 times faster than previously. In Argentina, Supercanal, the country's second largest cable operator, has also installed WinCAPS to caption news and other live programming, using speech recognition.

RED BEE MEDIA FRANCE SUBTITLES LIVE WEBCASTS
September 2009: Red Bee Media is successfully using WinCAPS with the InVISION character generator to subtitle live webcasts. They provide real-time French subtitles for the PPR group, which includes the Gucci and Puma brands, for the live announcement of its quarterly financial results - including both scripted and live question and answer sessions.

SYSMEDIA BRINGS TELETEXT TO KENYA
August 2009: Kenya Broadcasting Corporation has started to provide the country's first ever teletext transmissions after taking delivery of a SysMedia teletext system. As advertising revenues grow it is hoped to expand this new service to include additional channels, automated contribution handling and scheduled page updates.

CHANNEL 4 PLAYOUT BY SCREEN SUBTITLING WITH SYSMEDIA'S ASSISTANCE
August 2009: Screen Subtitling, a SysMedia technology partner, has delivered its Polistream subtitle transmission system for the new Red Bee Media playout system for UK Channel 4. The system uses teletext inserter cards and PDC insertion technology provided by SysMedia.

MTV3 USES PLANET TO IMPROVE TELETEXT-ON-THE-WEB SERVICE
May 2009: MTV3 in Finland uses SysMedia's Planet software to replace its own teletext-to-web solution, so that real-time updates to its Tekstikanava website now occur within moments of the teletext page changing.

CABSAT: March 2009: UAE-based satellite broadcaster, Alaan TV has become the first to deploy SysMedia's NewsWatch newsroom-to-web automation technology. "This customer wanted the easiest way to publish stories from its TV newsroom on to its website, helping to expand its audience reach and coverage."

ICAREUS ANNOUNCED AS NEW TECHNOLOGY AND DISTRIBUTION PARTNER
February 2009: SysMedia has formed a multi-level strategic alliance with Icareus. The Helsinki based specialists in TV-centric interactive technologies with playout solutions across MHP, tru2way and DVB-H platforms, become technical partners for interactive digital TV and mobile TV. Icareus will also operate as a reseller for SysMedia's globally renowned WinCAPS subtitling products in Latin America through its sales offices in Montevideo (Uruguay) and Mexico City.

IBC 2008: The latest development means that the software can add full broadcast quality open-caption subtitles in any language to a digital media file as part of a software-only file-based workflow. This extends InFILE's capabilities to handle traditional burnt-in translation subtitles to the popular closed caption formats (teletext, Line 21 and DVB).

14 May 2008: MediaCast, SysMedia's new Dubai based distributor, secures their first sale with Viva Entertainment taking delivery of WinCAPS. Key factors in the choice of WinCAPS were its ability to import text files in various formats and to export completed subtitles to Final Cut Pro.

WINCAPS SAVES TIME FOR TV GELDERLAND
April 2008: TV Gelderland has purchased WinCAPS to subtitle its daily news and features. The use of live subtitling techniques with WinCAPS has allowed the Dutch regional broadcaster to deliver subtitles on its first news broadcast each evening, as well as each subsequent hourly repeat throughout the night.

NEW SUBTITLE CAPTURE UNIT REDUCES REPEAT COSTS
January 2008: SysMedia launches a new product that reduces repeat costs by re-using previously transmitted subtitles. The CAPture product decodes teletext from a video stream (be it a live transmission or a tape from the archive) and converts the subtitle data into a standard STL file.

RTÉ WINS AWARD FOR MOBILE PHONE TELETEXT SERVICE
December 2007: Irish public broadcaster RTÉ has won a prestigious Irish Internet Association award for its highly successful RTÉ Aertel Mobile Service. Powered by a new WAP output gateway module for the same SysMedia PLASMA system that drives the teletext service for its TV channels, the WAP-based service allows teletext pages to be viewed on a mobile phone.

FRANCE 3 DEPLOYS SDR7 SUBTITLE TRANSCODERS
November 2007: France 3 has started to deploy SysMedia's SDR7 Teletext-DVB subtitle transcoder across its DTT network. The units fit easily into the existing broadcast infrastrcture and existing subtitle preparation and playout workflows while providing improved subtitle display for the viewer at very low bandwidth.
